Report: Samsung Planning 10th Anniversary Galaxy With 6.7-inch Screen, 5G

We’re rapidly approaching the tenth anniversary of the Galaxy S line of phones, and Samsung is planning to go big. Like, physically large. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, Samsung has four versions of the Galaxy S10 in the works including one called “Beyond X” that will sport a massive 6.7-inch display, six cameras, and 5G support.

We’ve known for some time that Samsung was prepping several “normal” Galaxy S10 phones as the successors to the Galaxy S9. We now believe there will be three Galaxy S10 models. The smallest of them would have a 5.8-inch display like the S9. The largest will reportedly have a 6.4-inch display, slightly larger than the S9 Plus and the same size as the Note 9. At 6.7-inches, the Beyond X would dwarf most other phones on the market. The only widely known smartphone with a bigger screen is the 7.2-inch Huawei Mate 20 X.

Having six cameras sounds entirely unreasonable at first, but it makes a little more sense when you break it down. There will be four sensors on the back of the Beyond X and two on the front. We’ve seen those arrangements in the past—for example, Samsung’s Galaxy A4 has four rear cameras but just one on the front. Phones like the Pixel 3 and V40 have two cameras on the front. Putting all those cameras together on one phone is extravagant, though. It will probably also help inflate the price to astronomical levels.

The other notable change for the Beyond X is support for 5G wireless service. This is only starting to roll out in the US with Verizon and AT&T pledging to have consumer-ready networks in the coming months. The Beyond X could be among the first phones to take advantage of the multi-gigabit data speeds of 5G.

It seems like the Beyond X will be positioned in a similar way to Apple’s announcement of the iPhone X last year. There will still be “normal” versions of the flagship phones, but the 10th-anniversary device will be a more expensive and radical take on the company’s products. Keep in mind, Samsung is already charging $1,000 for the Note 9. This monster 5G phone will undoubtedly be more expensive.

The WSJ report suggests all four phones could be unveiled in early February. However, the three 4G Galaxy S10 models are expected to ship first. The Beyond X would only launch when carriers are ready to offer service.
