Images and Specs Leak for Samsung’s Second Foldable Phone
We’ve heard rumblings that Samsung’s second foldable phone could debut soon, and a new leak lays out all the details and press images. The Galaxy Z Flip has more in common with the upcoming Moto Razr than it does with Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy Fold. It’s a clamshell device with a large folding OLED inside. Unlike many 2020 phones, this one allegedly won’t support 5G networks.
When the Galaxy Z Flip is closed, it looks like the flip phones of old — it’s a smooth, shiny square with a tiny OLED ticker display. There’s also a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Instead of a keypad and small display on the inside, you get a huge 6.7-inch flexible OLED. WinFuture claims this panel will clock in at 2636 x 1080. You can also see the small hole-punch at the top for the front-facing camera. When open, the screen has a ratio of 22:9, which is extremely tall. There are a few 21:9 phones, and those are already weirdly tall. When open, the device is 7.2mm thick. Closed, it’s roughly 15.3mm.
Some previous leaks have claimed this phone will use a new ultra-thin flexible glass, which could be a substantial improvement over other foldable phones. The plastic used on the Galaxy Fold and Moto Razr is very soft, so it’s more likely to scratch than a glass screen. Motorola also spent years developing its Razr hinge, which prevents a deep crease from forming in the middle of the display. A glass screen should reduce the appearance of a crease without the fancy hinge. The leak also claims you can set the Galaxy Z Flip down on a table with the display propped open anywhere between 70 and 110-degrees.
The outside of the phone has two cameras, reportedly both 12MP. One of them will be a standard wide-angle, and the other will be ultra-wide with a 123-degree field-of-view. The camera in the hole punch will be just 10MP.
The Galaxy Z Flip will be a high-end phone, but it won’t have the same specs as most 2020 flagships. It will stick with the 2019 Snapdragon 855+ instead of the 865. The newer Qualcomm chip requires a 5G modem, so it looks like the Galaxy Z Flip will be 4G-only. You’ll also get 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, both of which are in the ballpark of Samsung’s flagship phones. The battery might be a problem, though. The Galaxy Z Flip has just 3,300mAh of capacity and support for 15W fast charging.
The leak claims the Galaxy Z Flip will make an appearance at Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 14th. The new leak claims a price of €1,500, but rumors also point to a potential AT&T launch in the US with a $1,400 price tag.
