Tesla Owner Takes Delivery, Heads for Autobahn Experience

If this were a pickup truck video, one of the tags would be “hold-my-beer-and-watch-this,” and in the final frames, the video might appear to be upside down. Now that the European deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 have begun (Feb. 6), we’ll be seeing all manner of Model-3-in-Europe videos.

Here’s YouTuber “Dan’s Tesla,” who apparently took delivery of a Model 3 in mid-February in the Netherlands, then proceeded 80 km (50 miles) to Germany’s Autobahn for a satisfying high-speed Fahrt lasting 213 seconds. Dan does note he’s “not used to driving on the autobahn” and backed off after a bit. Survive to live another day and all.

Since no one at wfoojjaec would spend their time trolling for silly car videos (don’t ask how the Charger-Hellcat-In-Europe video got attached below), kudos to InsideEVs for finding this gem. As Eric Loveday writes,

Probably not what we would do right after taking delivery of a brand new car. However, this new Model 3 owner left the Tesla Tilburg delivery center and immediately set a course for the German Autobahn. Once there, he picked up the pace quite a bit, despite a lack of familiarity with the Autobahn and high-speed driving.

The Model 3 handled high speeds without a problem, but the driver sort of chickened out, as you might say. Since he’s not used to high speeds, he says it was difficult to judge when to apply the brakes to slow for traffic ahead.

High-speed driving isn’t really Tesla’s strong suit, but it’s welcoming to know that the Model 3 has no issues at well over 130 MPH.

Tesla’s Tilburg, Netherlands, delivery center, from whence the drive originated. It started Model 3 deliveries this month. Before that, most Model 3s went to the US market. Deliveries in China are beginning, too.

Dan described his trip thusly:

I took my brand new Model 3 to the german highway, just 80KM away from the Tilburg delivery center. 209KM/h while wifey [“wifey”?] is holding her laptop [and phone], no problem. I was too afraid to keep pushing as I’m not used to driving on the autobahn and it was difficult to judge when to apply brakes.

Dan’s site also has videos of the delivery, a voiceover to screen-captures explaining the delivery process, as well as videos “Model 3 delivery in 4 days – super excited” and “Model 3 delivery tomorrow, Europe.”

To prove our Tesla fan is not alone in the GoPro-Meets-Autobahn sector, here’s a 2018 video titled, “Passing a cop [on the Autobahn] in a Charger Hellcat @ 145 mph.” There is some discussion about whether the poster meant 145 mph or 145 kph (90 mph) and “I[t]’d be nice if you at least let people know you’re changing lanes. If there was only some sort of device that did that….”

Apropos of speed, it is nice to hear big-block American V8 sounds on Germany’s speed-unlimited (in some sections) highway:

NASA Gives Up on InSight’s Burrowing Mars Heat Probe

NASA's InSight lander has been studying the red planet for more than two years now. During that time, InSIght has beamed back data on the planet's seismic activity, weather, and even the sound of blowing wind. It was also supposed to relay data on the planet's internal temperature, but NASA has announced that it's giving up on that endeavor after being unable to get the heat probe to burrow into the fine Martian soil.
