Samsung Reportedly Finishes Redesigning the Galaxy Fold
Samsung wanted to release the Galaxy Fold several months ago, but hardware defects in the first batch of review units led to an indefinite delay. Now, Samsung has reportedly finished redesigning the device to make it more durable. However, the company hasn’t decided on a manufacturing timeline or a new launch date.
One of the first things that some reviewers did was peel off the Galaxy Fold’s screen protector. It wasn’t a screen protector, though. It was the top layer of the foldable OLED that looked like a screen protector or shipping film. Samsung has expanded that layer to the edges of the device and made it flush with the surface so that doesn’t happen in the future.
Samsung has apparently also re-designed the hinge to address other complaints. The new hinge is pushed slightly upward from the screen, which stretches the display layers more when the phone is open. Several review units earlier this year developed bulges and dead spots after dust and debris infiltrated the edges of the display. The new hinge should make it harder for dust to creep inside and damage the OLED. It also helps reduce the formation of a crease in the middle of the display over time.
Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold with a nearly $2,000 price tag, and there’s no indication it’s going to back off. The company is supposedly planning to ship new components to its manufacturing facilities in Vietnam soon, but it has not decided when to release the Fold. Samsung has an Unpacked event in August to unveil the Galaxy Note 10. People familiar with Samsung’s plans say the company probably will not talk about the Fold at that event. Huawei announced a foldable phone shortly after Samsung, but that device has been delayed indefinitely in light of Huawei’s ongoing issues with the US.
