Important Differences Between SATA-III and NVMe

Before you actually buy any of these deals, it’s important that you first understand the difference between SATA-III and NVMe SSDs, as this can have an enormous impact on drive performance. SATA-III SSDs are the slower SSDs that support transfer speeds up to 560MB/s. NVMe SSDs are significantly faster with the slowest models offering twice the performance of SATA-III drives and the fastest models currently on the market transferring data at speeds up to 3,500MB/s.

It’s often easy to tell the two apart just by looking at them. All NVMe SSDs use the M.2 interface and these are almost entirely flat and exceptionally small. SATA-III drives are typically larger and use the 2.5-inch form factor first standardized for compact hard drives. This isn’t always the case, however, and some SATA-III SSDs may use the M.2 form factor and appear identical to M.2 NVMe SSDs but transfer data at SATA-III speeds. You should read the description of each drive careful to ensure that you buy the correct drive you want.
